9/9/2009 - 3 Perfect Golf Days---Mobile, Alabama

The port city of Mobile, Alabama, is home to great golf and plenty to keep you entertained and well-satiated when off the fairways. This Gulf Coast destination is a favorite of our staff and golf travelers alike. Here is a sample of our 3-prefect days in Mobile: Given our druthers, our staff would stay and play with the following package:

Check in:

The Hampton Inn, located just minutes from the historic downtown Mobile area, is guaranteed to please golf traveler. With service you can count on, the friendly staff welcomes you in a spacious lobby – perhaps designed by a golfer who liked to congregate with fellow floggers before a round and after a satisfying complimentary hot breakfast. It’s also the perfect setting for a game of cards after 18 or 36 holes, and of course a bit of trading the days’ golf experiences.

As for your well-appointed room with a comfortable desk area, if you’re like us, it’s really all about the bed. Enjoy a night on “Cloud Nine,” a bed with a reputation for an awesome night’s rest and a signature item at Hampton Inns. Golfers, rest your engines!

Day 1 Golf:

Cross beautiful Mobile Bay and view the permanently ported USS Alabama battleship as you head toward TimberCreek on the city’s scenic Eastern Shore. Earl Stone’s 27-hole championship layout presents a classic round of golf along rolling fairways amid the South’s infamous fauna such as magnolias and long-needle pines. Staffers enjoy the signature hole, # 7 on Dogwood; with water on the approach, it’s a “risk and reward” opportunity.

Day 2 Golf:

Once again heading to the Eastern Shore, discover the lushness of Rock Creek Golf Club’s 18 captivating holes, also designed by Mr. Stone. Dramatic changes in nature’s scenery and winding paths allow you to forget your cares beyond your next swing. Remarkable changes in elevations give rise to some of the challenges. Number 17, a favorite par 4, demands a solid drive with a scenic approach over a marsh to a tightly tucked pin.

Day 3 Golf:

Four words come to mind when golfing in Alabama – Robert Trent Jones Trail– and today you head to Magnolia Grove, home to the RTJ Trail’s original southern-most championship courses, The Crossings and The Falls, which sit on the fringes of West Mobile and will delight your senses and challenge your game.

Nightlife:

Even if you par every hole, the sun will eventually go down on your golf game. Not to worry! This southern city offers food and beverage venues that favor both the historic and the happening along the Gulf coast.

For those in search of a downtown pub in which to rally over the day’s play, consider the iconic Callaghan Irish Social Pub, a small, funky establishment tucked away in an historic downtown neighborhood just a tad off the beaten path. Or check out the successful newcomer, Liquid Sushi, on upper Dauphin Street for an eclectic scene. For bayside dining, it must be Bimini Bob’s. Owned by Alabama football legend Bob Baumhauer, this Caribbean-flair fish grill is right where the I-10 bayway meets the Eastern Shore. For those nights you don't want to venture far, Carrabba’s Italian Grill is just a short hop from the hotel.  Although a chain, it is our number one pick for perfect service and primo pasta primavera.
