At a former company, I would write a quarterly column entitled the “View from the Room.” Each quarter, I’d snap a photo from a hotel at some resort location and then write an article about why our clients should travel to that location for their next vacation. Continuing that tradition here at Fairways and GolfThere.com, I’ve written a few articles for our website and quarterly publication. However, when I was asked to do an article about the Natural State Golf Trail of Arkansas, I had to chuckle as I thought of a very good friend who started this idea, right there in Little Rock.
Jim Goodwin, who owned a travel agency with his lovely wife, Janice, wrote columns after leading groups of 10 to 100’s of fellow Arkansans to every corner of the globe. I joked with Jim, who passed away this year, that every good idea is worth duplicating. He agreed and so I continue his tradition today. By the way, Jim Goodwin, was perhaps the nicest and most humorous man that I’ve ever known – and I’ve known some funny guys! So, if you enjoy the “View from the Room” tip your golf cap to Jim – if you could live without it, well, write me and tell me where I need to improve!
This issue won’t be a true “View from the Room” because our featured photograph is a view from the front steps of the Hot Springs
Country Club looking out over several holes. I assure you, the pictures do not do justice to the panoramic vista that greets each golfer to Hot Springs. Hot Springs Country Club is par of the Natural State Golf Trail. The Trail was the brain child of Fairways’ founder, Don Faggard, and Mr. Jim Shamburger, President of the Natural State Golf Trail as an answer to the world renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail of Alabama. On a recent trip, we visited several of the courses in the Little Rock area that provide a diverse golfing experience and some truly great hospitality.
Hospitality was never more evident than in the capital city of Little Rock. Arkansas eateries are plentiful but a visit to Doe’s which has a bit of interesting history (Bill Clinton’s favorite steak place) is a must. It is a truly “one of a kind” dining experience at a most unusual steakhouse. Steaks are served by the pound with a two pound minimum! You can however split a three pounder (that is exactly what we did).
Golf at Hot Springs Country Club along with the many other courses that are a part of the Natural State Golf Trail can be a great golf vacation for our customers. In fact, between great golf and great food, you’ll not be disappointed with the Natural State Golf Trail and you will truly find out why Arkansas really is the “Natural State”. Call our golf specialists today and tell them you want to eat at Doe’s, see Little Rock and golf the Natural State Golf Trail this coming year!
