Killeen Castle
The rich history behind Killeen Castle is enough to make you want to travel to Ireland, not to mention the amazing golf experience that comes with it. This ancient estate is set among 600 acres of 12th century Norman castles. For over 800 years Killeen has stood at the heart of Royal Meath, ancient home to the Kings of Ireland. Originally, Killeen served as home to the Plunkett family, Earls of Fingall, who were among the oldest Anglo-Irish family. The castle was sold by the 12th Earl of Fingall in 1951 and it fell victim to fire. It then lay in ruins until 1997 when it was purchased with the vision to create the majestic estate that it is now.
The Jack Nicklaus-designed course featured at Killeen stretches over 350 acres of natural woodlands and is set to host the 2011 Solheim Cup. The lakes at Killeen are full of fish and the rustic landscaping serves as perfect backdrop for an ideal Irish golf game. The bent grasses used at Killeen create putting surfaces that are fast and true year-round and the 330 miles of drainage ensure that the course is playable no matter what the weather is like.To play an Irish course like Killeen is to travel back in time, and golfers will feel the sense of nostalgia as they wind their way around ancient castles and picturesque landscape.
